Natural Parks

Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands of spain is a Biosphere Reserve since 1993. This title has it's explanation. It has 13 natural protected spaces. The most important being the National Park of Timanfaya which takes over 30,000 acres of spectacular volcanic sights.

Yaiza in Lanzarote is a protected space in which 50% of its land is protected. Some of its protected spots are Jameos, Timanfaya, Teneguime, La Gueria, and the Archipielago Chinijo, and definitely shouldn't be missed during your vacation in Lanzarote, on the Canary Islands.

Timanfaya National Park was declared protected in 1974, and has over 5,000 hectares of volcanic rock, lunar landscapes, and over 25 volcanic craters.

If you go to the north of the island, you will discover the Archipielago Chinijo Natural Park, which forms small islands: La Graciosa, and Alegranza, both have been declared a Natural Park since 1986.

Los Volcanes Natural Park is also worth a visit, and is located on the outskirts of Timanfaya.

As far as national monuments, you should definitely see the Monumento Nacional de la Corona (in the northwest of the island), which is surrounded by badlands, where endemic species roam in the darkness of the volcanic vents. Also to see is the Monumento Nacional del os Ajaches, which is the oldest geological formation on the island. Also worth mentioning is the Monumento Nacional de las Montañas de Fuego, formed by the volcanic eruptions of 1730.

Science lovers will enjoy Los Jameos with its blind crabs which have adapted to the darkness and the sea water which has flooded the volcanic vents.
