Lanzarote is a Biosphere Reserve with many things to do. It is a protected National park with various natural areas. Just from the description, you will know that this island of the Canary Islands in Spain is one in which you can practice trekking, surfing, golf, horseback riding and other many outdoor activities and aquatic sports. Whether it is the Timanfaya National Park or in Teguise, there are many hiking routes in Lanzarote to enjoy, and just as many companies that offer guided tours in many languages of these routes.
Climb inside or walk the edge of a volcano, or walk over boiling hot rocks with small, guided groups. It is NOT advisable that you try hiking in this area on your own if you are not familiar with the place.
If you are looking to go hiking in the North of the island, you can either choose Timanfaya National Park which was mentioned above, or Famara Natural Park, which has a very distinct landscape.
The best time to practice hiking in Lanzarote is from October to March, when the heat is not so overwhelming, and also recommended is to go to places where there are reputable companies that organize specific routes and familiarize the hikers, such as the Volcanes Natural Park, the Cueva de los Naturalistas; Famara and its natural park, and the protected space of La Geria. Of these routes before mentioned, two not to be missed are those of Timanfaya and the Ruta de los Volcanes.
Aside from hiking, there are many sports and activities that one can practice in Lanzarote. Skiing, golf, windsurf or scubadiving, are some of the many things you can enjoy here.
