Lanzarote is part of the Canary Islands in Spain, otherwise known as the Canaries. It is the most northern point on the island. It's distance with the Spanish penninsula is of about 1000kms, an it is located between Europe, Africa and America. It's distance with the african coast is 100kms. The population in the island is of 126,000 inhabitants.

Lanzarote forms part of the seven main Canary Islands: El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura.

The capital of Lanzarote is Arrecife, and the island has a size of 800 km sq. , has a mountanous terrain, and is an active volcanic island. The Timanfaya National Park is located in the south of the island and is made up of volcanic rock, and has a quite lunar landscape. Its maximum altitude is 607 metres (Peñas del Chache).

Lanzarote has a special charm. Its natural paradise is its jewel, and because of this, in 1993 it was declared a Biosphere REservation, becoming then a clear example of sustainable living. The number of tourist places to stay on the island is limited, as is its urban growth. About 90% of Lanzarote's land is protected in some way or other.

On this island, there are more than 10 protected nature spots, some of which are the Timanfaya National Park, Chinitos Natural Park, Los Volcanes Park, Los Jameos, and the Cueva de los Naturalistas.

In the municipalities of Lanzarote you will find its capital, Arrecife, and also other towns such as Haria, San Bartolome, Teguise, Tias, Tinajo, and Yaiza. All of these have their own districts.
